Updating outdoor cushions

June 30, 2023

We have outdoor furniture that we occasionally use. The cushions were old and stained (dark mold) and they needed to be updated before a certain kid’s graduation party last year.

That did not happen, and I embarrassingly had to use the horrible stained cushions with non-removeable covers that could not be washed.

Yuck.

I did have the fabric in time, but not the actual time to do it…or energy. I was sick with a summer cold, so only the bare minimum was getting done. I wanted to make sure that I got them done before

I designed my own fabric (of course), and then how much to buy of the 54″ wide fabric? I made this design and ordered 10 yards of fabric.

Totally guess-timating on the amount.

  • 2 chairs with 2 cushions
  • 2 cushions on footstools
  • 1 love seat with 2 cushions

I decided to also make another design as an accent fabric for the pillows when Spoonflower had a sale, so I chose to do a sunny yellow with one of the elements in the original design.

Next step was taking the cushions apart. Before the weather turned, I used my seam ripper and cut them off the cushions. I then actually cleaned out the cushion bin. My stack of covers to remake:

I had redone the bottom cushions on the chair and loveseat in the past, but not the rest. I decided to make them a bit different than how they were done originally. I also wasn’t really interested in adding piping in all of them. It would be more difficult to add in zippers if I kept them the same as before. They need to be taken off and be washed.

Very important upgrade.

I had about enough fabric to mistakenly cut a few pieces wrong and still have a little extra. I decided to do a little piping with the contrasting fabric. Of course, I didn’t have a ton of piping cord, so I used some macrame cord I had on a roll.

Now, about 8 months after taking off the cushions and a long winter, the cushions in their element (the colors do match the design…it was just hard to get the color right):
