Nivalis tunic

February 7, 2016

As I was on a roll with getting sewing done, I volunteered to do the pre-test for the Sofilantjes Nivalis Tunic and Dress.  The timing was not the best, as work decided to get very busy (like I didn’t know that would happen), and now I am sick.  Yes, a bit over-extended.

I made three versions and sewed the tunic in the cap and long sleeves, with the hood on all of them.

Here are my tester versions.

Tester version #1:  Straight size 10, with size 11 arm length.

Changes made to the pattern afterwards: Curve was raised up, and hem was lowered

Fabrics: Purple – poly lycra sweatshirt fabric, Print – Iris Damask (my design) in Modern Jersey.  I scaled the design down to printing it at 6 x 6.

rrrIris_Damask_previewpurple nivalisIt fit her, I just didn’t get pictures of it.  This first version of the color-blocked curve hit mid-breast, so I suggested to raise the curve up.  It looked perfectly fine on the younger girls, but with older girls, not only is that area a little sensitive, but they can get self conscious about it if you highlight that area.  The second version of the curve hits in a better spot.

Tester Version #2: Size 10, no modifications

Changes made to the pattern afterwards: Cap sleeve was slimmed down, as it was a little wide here.  Length added.

Fabric: White tissue knit and Butterfly Tattoo (my design) in Modern Jersey.

When I draw a design, I only do one side of it, so it will be symmetrical on the other side.  When putting the two sides together, it can sometimes be surprising.  On this design, when I put them together, it resembled a butterfly to me, so I added some antenna and voila!  Cool looking butterfly!

This was printed on Modern Jersey again.  It turns out less vibrant on the fabric, so it less of a hot pink color.

20160118-DSC_0038 20160118-DSC_0041I love how this turned out with the hood.  It is a fairly thin hood, so perfect to get the sun off her head if she needs it.  The bermuda shorts are Emilya’s by Simple Life Pattern Company in a size 8W, 12L.

Tester version #3: Size 10 width with size 11 length

Changes made to the pattern afterwards: Some length added to the hem

Fabric used: Panne velvet knit and poly lycra knit

I love how stylish this one looks, yet so very comfortable!  She said it looked too plain.  The girl doesn’t know what she is talking about, I tell you.  The leggings are Oliver + S Playtime leggings, with length added to the hem, in a plush lycra velour knit.  In cutting these fabrics I had to make sure the nap was going down on them.  One of those times you need to pay attention.
