Joggers in Night Scribble

June 30, 2018

I have a tendency to draft new patterns whenever I have a sample strike off to sew up.  I know…Imma little cray cray in that.  I have to say they don’t always turn out, but this one did!

This is called Night Scribble and is a cross-custom fabric groups print.  The original print is from Thread Therapy Fabrics in Australia, but is also offered by Fabric Anthropology for U.S. customers.  Shipping can be so expensive when ordering from other countries.  This method helps both groups get access to each other prints, so a pretty good deal for the consumers.

I had orginially requested the print in bamboo lycra, but ended up receiving a cotton-lycra piece.  Not a huge deal, so I just had to come up with something different for the garment.  The bases are generally used for different apparel applications.  This is a nice thick cotton lycra, so using it for joggers was perfectly acceptable.

Of course, I had to be extra.  I added some pleather to it.

This pleather is one I purchased from Amazon last year at some point and it doesn’t have stretch.  That is not a deterrent, of course, because most fabrics have stretch on the bias.

I added the cutouts to my pattern (self-drafted joggers).  I just took the pattern, figured out how deep I wanted the pockets and drew a curve.  The curve on the back is shallower, but they both met on the sides.  I then add a seam allowance and place the pieces on top of each other so I can put some notches that meet up.  On curves, the notches are important to make sure they match up correctly.  I don’t use a “notch”, I just make a shallow snip with my scissors.

On the front of the design pockets were added with a zipper.  These aren’t incredibly deep pockets, but they work fine.  Unfortunately I did not get them serged across the top evenly.  Ugh.  Oh well.  I did place the zippers evenly.  The pockets and the back piece are both faced with a black bamboo jersey.  It is lightweight, and works for comfort.

I can wear them bunched up at a capri length or all the way down.  I don’t like joggers that have a big dropped crotch and super fitted through the calves.  These are a style I much more prefer.  The waist is a heavy ponte with lycra that is contoured and doubled up.

The shirt I sewed up here is an interesting shape.  I drafted it from a Pinterest picture.  The fabric is ripped on top with a sheer underneath (purchased locally).  It shouldn’t be tooooo see-through.  The neck opening is about 12″ wide.  You need to make these shirts wider than you think you would, since you wear it on the diagonal.  I’m thinking of making one for the girl, too.

The fabrics in this round are wide ranging and beautiful.  I made three pieces from the round, and love how all of them turned out.
