I was offered to sew up these strike-off samples, which are more for a younger child. My kids were well past the age that these printed samples would fit, so I went to the next best alternative…my grand-nephew!
My niece’s husband did time in the Army as an EOD specialist (think: Hurt Locker), and now he is going to school to be an accountant using his school benefit. I thought this would be a great shirt to make for his son.
My dad was also Army during the Vietnam War. He was a recon platoon leader, and his stories that he is finally starting to tell are the things movies are made of.
This military inspired round is from Affordable Fabrics and More (Pre-order form is here). They have all the difference service areas, with a few coordinates to match. I received two child panels, and a fat half of each of the camo and coordinate.
This shirt is from Ottobre Design 4/2008. It has been a while since I cracked one open and traced off a pattern from them. If you have ever seen their pattern sheets, you know why they aren’t the first thing I grab! The overlapping patterns in different colors are a little hard to follow, plus you need to add seam allowances.
This one looked like it had a hood on the pattern sheet, but no hood was shown on the assembly description. I traced it off, so I went with it, and added a band around the hood.
The pocket was supposed to go in the middle front, but it would have obscured the Army logo, so I added it to the sleeve. I also added the extra band around the top of the faux double sleeve.
Love how this turned out and can’t wait to give it to him!

I love what you did with this, and that pocket is super cute. I hardly break into my ottobres, but really, since I trace PDFs anyway, tracing theirs and adding sa is really no less work after printing and taping for me. But I need to brave getting back into my burda magazines! 😬😬
Thanks!
I know what you mean. I already have to print out, assemble and then cut or trace the pdf patterns, so really these aren’t any worse! I need to get some tracing paper, though. I usually just use parchment or wax paper to trace them off.
