I never really know how the girl will go when it comes to dresses. Sometimes she loves them and sometimes she is more, “meh…”, and it goes to the back of her closet.
I showed her this pattern, and she said she would wear it. I think the pockets sold her on it. Pockets are always good.

She chose the fabrics. Another way to win her over. This fabric is a brushed poly print from Fabric Anthropology called Frosted Coal. She said she will have retail when her next pre-order comes in.
The black solid is a much thinner double brushed poly from Aurora fabrics. This was my first time buying dbp from that shop, and it is a bit too thin for my tastes. It is very nice and soft, but I question it’s strength. I’m hoping the dress doesn’t rip from the weight of the skirt.
I had to grade for her (like always!), and so I made a 14H, 13W graded to 11W at the waist. Grading to make sure the patterns fit their measurements is pretty important and central to the idea of making clothes that fit.
Here is the second one, where I put clear elastic in the pocket seam while stitching it up. It makes it so it doesn’t stretch out so much, but the openings of these pockets are pretty wide. Just be aware that there might be some drooping depending on the kind of fabric you use. I used brushed poly for both dresses, since she likes how soft and comfy they feel.
The fabric here is one I purchased from a custom fabric shop in the UK called 42 Custom Fabrics. I didn’t pay enough attention to see that they sold the coordinates by the 1/2 meter. Instead of the two meters I thought I had ordered, I only got one meter. I had to really work to get these two pieces out of the 2 meters of the leggings panel and coordinate, plus a matching solid poly I had in the closet. I did have to join some pieces that were supposed to be cut on the fold. At least any fabric waste was minimal, since I was really creatively cutting to make sure I could get my pieces all out of the fabric.
When they were selling the pre-order for the leggings panels they said ladies around 5′ 5″ would be able to make them work. There definitely wasn’t enough length to not have to add a bit to the top. I had to add a 6″ band to the top. She does like more of a high waist, but even low-waist there wasn’t enough without adding to it. The girl is pretty leggy and 5′ 5″. I measured the other panel I got and it is around 36″. I think we just are longer on the bottom in this house.

Wow, I adore that first dress. The dress is so lovely, and she looks gorgeous. It’s so nice to see how this pattern looks on an older girl in such a sophisticated fabric combination.
The blue one is stunning & the fit is great. But I think the black one is my favourite…
