Here are the deets on this outfit. I was going for a gypsy/forest witch kind of look to them.
The fabric is from the Fashion Week line at Fabric Anthropology. The woven and bamboo printed with a more purple and less black color than the brushed poly from the pants outfit. I desaturated these photos so you could see how they will look in the final printing. That is why they print samples, so they can fix the color at the printer.
The black fabrics are bamboo from Nature’s Fabrics.
The Skirt:
Lest you think that I just draw up a pattern and go to town, I had to do some thinking on this skirt. I had a different idea at first, when trying to plan for this challenge. Once I got the fabric, I needed a different plan as the fabric was thicker than I expected. Knowing how fabric thicknesses will lay once sewn up can affect how your design will work. I needed a new plan.
I decided to do an A-line skirt with godets. It ended up more “circle skirt” than A-line, though. I drafted up the skirt pieces a few times, and it is not as full as originally drafted. It ended up pretty full.
I thought I would have enough fabric for it (I requested 4 yards), but I had to use a lining fabric for the under-skirt. The FA fabric is attached to it for about 14″ on the bottom. This saved me a bit of fabric, and also makes the skirt not stick to itself underneath. Woven can be “sticky”.
I did a drop waist with rivets and lacing on the side.
It is hard to see that in the styled pictures, as the top covered the lacing. I originally had belt loops on it, but it just wasn’t working. I also didn’t have darts, thinking the lacing would pull it in enough. I made it too big, so there was no pulling it in. I added the darts in after the lining was on, so I just stitched them all flat. I should have put the rivets on the pleather after sewing them on, because they are not even on each side. I think it must have pulled a bit when sewing them. It’s not really noticeable unless you really look at them.
The Top:
I tried on some of my tops in my closet to try to figure out what would look best. A more fitted top was needed since the skirt is so full. I have been shying away from fitted tops lately as I tend to gain weight in my stomach, and I’m not really comfortable there right now. I tried to do a top with some ruching to hide the problem areas.
It ended up a little looser than intended, but I like how it turned out. I knew I wanted a bit cowl on it, though I should have gone wider. I added a bottom section that had the ruched channel at the sides. I can wear it un-gathered up with leggings for more bum coverage.
The Over-top:
I knew it was too much of the FA fabric, so the outfit needed something to break it up. I added this small overtop out of a heavy bamboo knit, pleather and a stretch sequin lace.
This was really just taking a knit block, cutting it apart a bit and modifying the sleeves. I made sure the the overtop had a larger armscyce and neck opening than the top, so it wouldn’t fit too tight.
