Cargo yoga pants

December 12, 2020

On the next installment of things I have been meaning to make for years, are these yoga pants I have had pinned on Pinterest:

I don’t want to make them so wide-legged, and I wanted a higher, different waistband. I purchased a heavy bamboo lycra from Nature’s Fabrics for this project (380 GSM). This needs a bottom weight fabric, so an athletic knit would work well for it, too.

I used the pants pattern I made the previous summer for my work pants, so that part was pretty easy. Having a good standard leggings/yoga fit pattern in your pattern library is essential. I may adjust them a bit depending on the stretch of the fabric, but these patterns are so versatile.

Next for the patterning were the pockets, and figuring out where to place them on the butt. Butt placement is very important.

I put the pockets on about 3″ below the top hem on the back piece, and it probably would have been better at 2″. The pockets were interfaced, with multiple layers and I had to use my old 401A since my Janome is in the shop. Fun times.

The wasn’t sure what I wanted to use for the closures: buttons or slides.

I ended up going with the buttons, since otherwise it would have been too much to sit on. My main sewing machine was MIA at the fix it shop, so no button holes. I used elastic.

Another project off the to-do list pile. Plus…this is comfy to wear at home while working during the day.

I decided to add a top to go with it, so as to look sort of put together and presentable to public. This was just a simple top. I was going to use a pattern I hacked a few years ago using Wardrobe by Me Basic Top pattern. However…I figured that since this sweatshirt fleece didn’t have a lot of stretch, that I needed a looser fitting sweatshirt. I decided to use the hood that I drafted added on top of the Nap Time Creations Slouchy Sweatshirt. I added 1″ on the fold and really didn’t need to, even though is probably at least 4 years ago the last time I made it.

This hood pattern is good to use when you don’t want to line the hood and to show the back of the fabric. This was a light sweatshirt knit that I picked up locally. I decided to show the inside on the cuffs and band.

Now I need to work on some gifts, one of which is a leather horse halter. Gotta get my leather tools out again!
