If you follow my blog, you know that I made the girl an Elsa costume in April for a Wizard World comic convention. She was a hit at the convention, with much pictures taken of her with little girls and other cosplayers. Thank goodness she decided to be Elsa for Halloween, so she got more use out of her costume. She actually wants to use it next year again, but I like to make costumes so I hope she decides on another character. The Boy wants to be Conner from Assassin’s Creed 3 (that Dad has played). I have my work cut out for me on that one!
So, yes, she was Elsa for Halloween, along with many, many other little girls…
🙂
Unfortunately, the weather was not conducive to a sheer-sleeved dress (in the 30’s F). Luckily I had a few yards of minky fabrics to make her a suitable cape to go with her dress.
The cape is adapted from an old pattern I had that went up to a size 8. It also wasn’t really long enough, so I added length to the cape. I drew up a hood, which I honestly should have made a bit deeper. It worked well enough, but I marked up the pattern that I needed to add some depth if I make it again.
The minky on the inside is a bit of a purplish-blue, so it doesn’t really match the dress. Oh well, I wasn’t running out to the fabric store to buy anything, so she got what she got! The white works with it, so that is the important part.
For the closure, I sewed a narrow elastic into the front seam…or at least I tried to. Darn stuff was slippery, so one of them didn’t make it through the serger. I just sewed it on the backside. Good enough. I already had to pull the fur out of the seams with my seam ripper. I didn’t want to have to use it more than necessary.
The big buttons were from my button stash.
At one point my Grandma Jo gave me all of her buttons from her many, many years of sewing. I don’t need to buy buttons unless it really is a specialized project.
So, here was our Elsa! I still love her costume. It’s awesome. It was a PITA to sew, but it is awesome. 🙂
Oh I love it! She looks great! The caoe looks so warm and cozy!
It was super warm and cozy! Minky on both sides is definitely a warm combination. 🙂
I still love that Elsa dress & the cape you made goes with it perfectly. Nice icy makeup, too.
Thanks! She loved the makeup…she is at that age where she wants to start using makeup. Ugh. Not ready for that yet!
OK, I probably should know this… but what is cosplay? The cape and outfit look great! 🙂
Thanks Kristi! Cosplay is a “hobby” where people dress up as characters from their favorite movie, tv show, video game, etc. There are conventions for pop culture, and people dress up in costumes when they go. There is a big Comic Con convention in L.A. (I think), but the one we go to is Wizard World, which is a traveling one that hits the major bigger cities in the U.S.. Do a google search on cosplay costumes and you will get a lot of interesting hits!
