So, remember this dress?
Well, I washed it on Monday in preparation for her Orchestra concert on Wednesday. It shrunk. The polyester satin lining shrunk, so now it is too small for her. I could barely zip it up.
That meant on Tuesday night I had to whip something up for her performance. I had this sequin lace overlay fabric that I got out of a remnant bin. It had some spots cut out of it, but I could still manage to make a full length skirt, per her request. I underlaid it with a cream satin lining fabric (so not super thick). The waistband was reinforced with interfacing, and is a flat front with elastic back.
The top was just a simple black poly lycra top. I didn’t have the energy to bling it up, and plus she can then wear it with pretty much anything afterwards.
Add a pretty necklace and some heels and she is all set to play Beethoven’s Ode to Joy!
There are definitely some issues with this skirt, as it is not as pretty on the inside as I usually like it to be, and the hem is not even with the lining.
But, I got the top and skirt made in less than 4 hours, and my sewing machine stopped working about 1 hour into the skirt. It apparently didn’t like sequins. Luckily I have two other sewing machines. I used my old, old Singer, and it plowed right through those sequins with nary an issue.
This isn’t a super glittery outfit, but still…sequins! I am linking it up to Project Run & Play week 3. I wasn’t sure I would get anything done this week, but so glad this turned out.
This is such a great outfit and so grown up looking. Mom to the rescue!
Thanks, Lori! Yes, us mom’s have to come to the rescue sometimes. π
I can’t believe you whipped up a formal concert outfit so fast! And one that involved sequins? Whew!
Thanks, Audrey! I was a little stressful trying to get it all done. I probably would have done some seam ripping if she didn’t have to wear it the next day, but it looks well enough. π
You saved the day!
Haha…yes! Well, it’s not like she didn’t have any other dresses, but this was more of what I hoped she would wear. She thought she was a bit overdressed. I told her it is better to be overdressed than underdressed, and she agreed with me. π
Cute, I love maxi skirts for pre-teens
Thank you! I know normally she wouldn’t wear a maxi skirt, since she is too active. It was a good opportunity to make one for her. π
I love that look on her, its very elegant.
Thank you! π The high school girls wear a black top and long black skirt, so I thought she looked a little like them with this outfit. They all look so pretty all dressed up.
I actually love the way the skirt looks with the overlay longer than the lining. No one would ever guess this was a last-minute project!
Thank you, Beth! I am a bit of a perfectionist, so I want it to be perfect. Unfortunately time was not on my side. π
She looks lovely! Very fun skirt.
Thank you so much!
Congrats on your PR&P sew-along win! Enjoy the prize π
Thanks, Rachel!
